The ILWU Political Action Committee advances its program through voter registration, education, lobbying and other means. The ILWU PAC strives to elect lawmakers who will work for workers, not against them; to protect worker rights and benefits through the legislative process; and to enable the little guy to make a difference in policy-making through collective action.
(Above) Then President of the Hawaii State AFL-CIO Harold Dias announces organized labors support for the Akaka bill at a press conference held on September 5, 2006. The ILWU is a member of the Hawaii State AFL-CIO, a voluntary federation of 60 local affiliate unions and councils in Hawaii whose parent international unions are affiliated at the national level with the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO). On November 3, 2005 Randy Pereirra of the Hawaii Government Employees Association (HGEA) was elected to serve as the new Hawaii State AFL-CIO President at its 21st Biennial Convention.
