July 2011-Affordable housing in Honolulu
Attached is a poster for a new condo project in Honolulu being marketed by Hawaiian Island Homes. The project is not yet built, but construction is expected to begin soon and be completed in 18 months. Several "affordable" units are still available in the project for those who qualify. ILWU members are eligible for discounts and credits, including a $3,000 closing cost credit if a unit is reserved by August 15, 2011.
Holomua is a good opportunity for those interested in buying a condo right in Honolulu. Holomua is fee-simple and located near the corner of Kalakaua Avenue and Beretania Street. It's a good starter home for anyone wanting to live in Honolulu at an affordable price.

May 2011 - Ah Quon McElrath Fund to award $10,000 in grants

The Ah Quon McElrath Fund for Economic and Social Justice (FESJ) is issuing a Request for Proposal (RFP) for grant funding for 2011-12.  The attached RFP describes the FESJ, the type of proposals being solicited, deadline for submission of proposals, and the date of the award announcement.  Two proposals will be awarded up to $5,000 each.

The first awards from the FESJ were made in 2010 to three organizations:  (1) Pride at Work Hawaii; (2) the Honolulu Symphony Musicians; and (3) the International Longshore and Warehouse Union.  Following is a summary of the projects as proposed by each organization, which will make presentations about their projects at a showcase event in December 2011:

1.         Pride at Work Hawaii was awarded $4,000 to sponsor LGBT Labor Leadership Training for union members who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender and want to become more active in their own unions.  In addition, Pride at Work also sponsored a workshop for non-LGBT and LGBT union negotiators to become more aware of issues and language affecting LGBT workers.  The sessions were held in January 2011.

2.         Honolulu Symphony Musicians was awarded $4,000 to present live music presentations in the community and conduct "concert chats" about the value of symphony music and the challenges facing symphony musicians in Hawaii.

3.         International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) was awarded $2,000 to support rank-and-file ILWU member attendance at the union's Leadership, Education and Development (LEAD) Institute in September 2010.  The goal of the LEAD Institute was to help participants understand and meet the challenges posed by the global economic crisis on collective bargaining and union activism.

We encourage your participation in this RFP process and welcome your proposal.  If you have any questions, you may contact Gail Long at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or the address above.

Thank you for your interest in the Ah Quon McElrath Fund for Economic and Social Justice.

Their website contains lots of useful for hotel workers. http://hitourismcareers.org.
