HARRIET BOUSLOG LABOR
SCHOLARSHIP FOR ILWU CHILDREN The Harriet
Bouslog Labor Scholarship was established by Harriet Bouslog and her husband, Stephen T.
Sawyer, in 1989 to benefit the children and grandchildren of ILWU members. Harriet Bouslog
dedicated her life to defending the ILWU and its members, working as the unions
first General Counsel from 1946 to 1978. She continued to support the working people of
Hawaii until her passing in 1998. The Bouslog Scholarship was established to demonstrate
this support as well as to commemorate the historic achievements of the ILWU and encourage
greater awareness and understanding among young people about the ILWUs economic,
social and political contributions to Hawaii. Scholarships are awarded each year to Hawaii high school
seniors to attend the University of Hawaii Manoa or Hilo campuses. The scholarship is
$1,000 per semester, and may be renewed up to four years, provided the student remains a
full-time student in good standing at the University of Hawaii. Harriet Bouslog with husband Steve Sawyer at the ILWU Hall in Honolulu, 1977. HOW TO APPLY Applicants must:

University before scholarship payment can be made. As a recipient of the Harriet Bouslog Labor Scholarship, you must stay in contact with the Scholarship Committee if you wish to continue your scholarship for the maximum four years (eight semesters). You must notify us of any change in address or your student status. To receive the scholarship, you must be a full-time

must inform us of your intent to continue your studies at the University of Hawaii. At the
end of each academic year, you must provide us with a copy (photocopy is allowed) of a
transcript of your grades. In addition, you must arrange with the Scholarship Committee for a brief internship with the ILWU each year. This internship will be for one day a year and can be fulfilled during the summer. The internship may involve shadowing a business agent, conducting membership surveys, assisting at events like Labor Day, picketing, signwaving, or other similar activities.
